Stefan Jaeger

Director, Producer

Stefan Jäger completed his vocational training at the “Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg” in Ludwigsburg. He studied screenwriting and directing and graduated with a diploma in January 1997.
Since 2002 he has been a lecturer at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. He also taught at the IFS (Internationale Filmschule/ International Filmschool) in Cologne and since 2009 he has been teaching at the Staatliche Schauspielschule in Stuttgart. In the same year he successfully applied to the Zurich University of the Arts as a lecturer on screenwriting and dramaturgy.

At the invitation of the Swiss Embassy and the Goethe Institute, he expanded his teaching activities t0 the Blue Nile Film Academy in Addis Ababa (ETH) in 2011. The collaboration was extended with the production of a full-length feature film “Horizon Beautiful”, which was screened at over 80 festivals worldwide and has received several awards.

Before his teaching career, straight after his studies, in 1998, he was able to realize his first full-length feature film. “Misguided Angel” is a mystical thriller that was shot in America.

His second feature film “birthday” (2000) was shot entirely on the basis of improvisation. The film was released in cinemas in Germany and Switzerland after it had been successfully screened at many international festivals, including as an official German contribution to the A-Festival in Karlsbad. In addition, “birthday” has won several awards, including the Screenplay and Audience Award at the Max Ophüls Festival in Saarbrücken.

In 2001 he wrote the avalanche drama “Im Namen der Gerechtigkeit” (In the Name of Justice) with the German screenwriter Oliver Keidel, for which he was also assigned the position of director by SRF (Swiss Radio and Television)BR (Bavarian Broadcasting).

In 2002 he directed the play “57′ 38” eternity” at the Schauspielhaus Zurich (Zurich playhouse), which he co-wrote with the actress Bibiana Beglau.

Thereafter he staged further plays. The focus of his work is always the engagement with the content and the interpretation with the actors.

His feature film “Hello GOODBYE” had its premiere at the 3rd Zurich Film Festival where it competed in the international competition. It was shown in Swiss cinemas in 2007. His film “Boxing Jesus”, which was shot in Italian, was screened in cinemas in 2008. The television film “Hunkeler und der Fall Livius” (Hunkeler- The case Livius) (co-production of SRF with ARTE) was awarded Best Television Film in 2009. He subsequently produced several documentary series for Swiss television and the two feature films “Der grosse Sommer” (Big & Little) (2015) and “Mathias Gnädinger – Die Liebe seines Lebens” (Mathias Gnädinger – the Love of His Life) (2016). “Der grosse Sommer” was the most successful german-speaking swiss feature film of 2016.

“Schellen-Ursli” (2015), for which he wrote the script, is one of the most successful Swiss films of all time.

Jäger is a member of the Swiss and European Film Academies.
